Back to basics: the critical turn in Information Literacy
Although the conceptual core of information literacy (IL), with its emphasis on acquiring abilities that enable one to ethically seek, use and create information, has remained quite stable since the term was first introduced, recent transformations in experiences of information and information use are subverting the current discourse of IL. Emerging new frontiers in IL research and practice were primarily brought about by participative information environments and accelerated by the critique of functionalist approaches that have determined IL research and practice. There are conceptual disagreements between IL as it was defined and perceived by Zurkowski (1974) and how it has to be perceived in the context of contemporary participatory information environments. This presentation will focus on CIL as a research paradigm that is congruent with participatory information environments and that reflects a shift from functionalist toward critical and transformative conceptualizations of IL. Recently, such shifts were exemplified by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy (2015) that makes a marked turn towards CIL. The speaker will elaborate her thinking on the nature of (C)IL and the implications for research. She will draw on her own (e.g. Koltay, Špiranec & Karvalicz, forthcoming; Špiranec, 2015) and other contemporary research (e.g. Whitworth, 2014), and define research challenges and directions initiated by the critical turn in IL. |
